After an unexpected hiatus in 2024, Fair Day is back in full swing at Victoria Park, bringing together over 200 food, retail, community stalls, and the best of our four-legged friends at the always camp Doggywood. In addition, Trans Camp and the Karaoke Cave are set to make their Fair Day debut, adding even more fun to the festival’s grand opening event.

This year’s float will showcase the iconic flame tree, planted in front of the University Quadrangle, which symbolises pride and hope and represents our queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders who paved the way.

The origins of Mardi Gras lie in a spontaneous protest ‘festival’ that took place one night in June 1978 on Sydney’s Oxford Street. With the rallying cry of “out of the bars and into the streets” 500 people grew to 2000. After the names of the 53 people that were brutally arrested were published in a newspaper, outing these people in public and putting them at serious risk, this small protest became a national symbol of LGBT activism. As the biggest event of the Sydney WorldPride festival, all eyes will be on our 12,500 marchers as 200+ floats adorn Oxford Street. Expect all your Parade favourites, from the famous rumble of the Dykes on Bikes to the quintessentially Australian Lifesavers With Pride and the many wonders of our LGBTQIA+ communities. A great place to start when it comes to adding a touch of Mardi Gras is with tablecloths and runners in the traditional colors  of purple, green, and gold.
Contrasting dramatically with that first-ever protest march, the parade now includes representatives of the police force, fire-fighters and emergency services staff and groups of Australian Defence Force personnel in uniform. Fireworks lit up the air as pre-parade celebrations kicked off with Dykes on Bikes Sydney, Boys on Bikes and Melbourne Motorcycles Tourers taking pride of place. Wearing a shimmering gold dress, pop singer Minogue made a surprise appearance during the event alongside Courtney Act and a group of drag queens dressed as the singer.
