The Western Australian government has launched the WA Residential Battery Scheme to provide an upfront rebate and no-interest loans for solar batteries. At the time of writing, there are no further state battery storage incentives available. The former City of Adelaide 50% discount on net battery installations has now closed.
Low cost loans are also available to fund rooftop solar power systems if applicants don’t already have one. Not all models each company manufactures may be eligible for the subsidy. Among the requirements to be accepted into the scheme, solar batteries must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable. Each household can only receive one Low Income Household Rebate per financial year, and the rebate applies only to your main residence. Home-based businesses that are operating primarily from the owner’s or an employee’s residence (with only one NMI for both residential and business electricity usage) is not eligible. You can submit only one application with all proposed goods/services to be purchased, including across different locations. Every business with an active ABN that meets the eligibility requirements can apply for a grant under this Program. Only one application can be submitted per ABN – but you can apply for projects at multiple sites in one application. Where an item from the Eligible Project Activities and Expenditure List refers to ‘replace’, it can only be purchased if you already have one.

Adding a solar battery enhances these benefits by providing energy independence, backup power, and greater control over your energy usage—advantages that go beyond just financial gains. Residents of the City of Adelaide can receive a 50% discount, up to $2,000, on solar battery storage through the Sustainability Incentives Scheme. The bad news is that unlike the Australian solar panel rebate, which is available nationally and is still generous in 2025, there are no federal incentives for solar batteries – yet.

South Australia already has the highest penetration of rooftop solar in Australia, and likely the world, with more than 220,000 households, or 31 per cent. The initiative, unveiled by Premier Jay Weatherill and energy minister Tom Koutsantonis, will offer the loans to 10,000 homeowners in the state, with no interest charged for the first seven years. This is a competitive grant scheme – under the pilot this financial year, total available funding is $75,000. Applications for this round close on May 20, with assessments to begin soon after.
Unfortunately, what may not be obvious is how it will often be a bad idea for a low income family to get a battery. Based on the early evidence, we are expecting a large increase in the demand for battery storage in Australia. In the short run this may lead to supply shortages and installations delays as the market attempts to catch up with the step increase in demand. For installations before 1 May 2026, eligible batteries will generate 8.4 STCs per usable kWh (capped at 50 kWh usable), with each certificate currently valued at around $37 after factoring in transaction and administration costs. From 1 May 2026 onwards the rebate will be $252 and will decrease every 6 months thereafter.

From 1 May 2026, typical household battery sizes keep the strongest support, while larger batteries receive reduced rebate rates for capacity above set bands. This helps keep the program sustainable while still rewarding everyday solar + storage upgrades. It’s expected the subsidy will decrease over time as the cost of solar battery storage continues to drop.
